One Century Later, A Family Ring Continues to Evolve

Almost 100 years old, a special piece of family history is still being passed through theĀ generations,Ā being updated each step of the way.Ā Alice and AndyĀ came to The Village GoldsmithĀ with their family heirloom ring, wanting to continue the tradition of personalising it with the receiverā€™sĀ birthstone.Ā

In 1927 Andyā€™s great-grandfather, Robert, gave his great-grandmother, Ida, a rose gold band on their wedding day. As Ida and Robert only had sons,Ā half aĀ centuryĀ later it was given to theirĀ 18-year-oldĀ granddaughter, Ronda - Andyā€™s mother and Aliceā€™s mother-in-law.Ā Ā Ā

When Ronda received the ring, she added two small diamonds and a garnet gemstone (Rondaā€™s birthstone), making it a three stone dress ring. Fast-forward to 2020, Ronda gifted the ring to Alice, her sonā€™s wife. Alice feltĀ it was aĀ great privilege inheriting this special piece of family history and wanted to honour Rondaā€™s tradition by remodelling the ring to incorporate herĀ birthstone,Ā topaz, into the design.Ā

Alice and Andy met with The Village Goldsmithā€™s talentedĀ designer andĀ master craftsman, Ben, with whom they discussed the ideas for the ringā€™s new design.Ā It was decided that the original rose gold band would remain the basis for the ring, and the setting would be created with new gold.Ā

Once Ben had created a designĀ which reflected their ideas, andĀ Alice and Andy were happy withĀ it,Ā he got to work withĀ handcrafting and bringing the ring to life.Ā To begin the crafting process Ben had to first remove the garnet and diamonds from the ring and detach their settings from the band.Ā

As the rose gold band was crafted in 1927, it has a slightly different rose gold tone to the rose goldĀ weĀ use today,Ā whichĀ meant BenĀ had toĀ createĀ aĀ special alloyĀ soĀ thatĀ theĀ colourĀ of the new setting would match the original rose gold band.Ā

Rolling out the new metal, Ben hand-formed the pear shapeĀ setting andĀ inlaid threeĀ carefullyĀ positionedĀ claws, which would hold theĀ peach tonedĀ topazĀ in place.Ā

After the new setting was crafted, the band was measured and cut so that the pear shape setting could fit snugly in place. Using the remainderĀ of the specially alloyed gold, the shoulders wereĀ craftedĀ andĀ carefullyĀ soldered onto the band.Ā
The ring wasĀ thenĀ passedĀ to our master setter, Adrian, to have a total of six diamonds set into the shoulders ā€“ three on each side, andĀ lastlyĀ the beautiful Imperial topazĀ wasĀ carefullyĀ set intoĀ place.Ā

After the precious gemstones were set, the ring was given a final polish and inspection before being presented to Alice and Andy. The ring will be enjoyed by Alice and then when the time is right, passed down to the next family member, who will be able to remodel it to feature their very own birthstone.

ā€œThe ring is absolutelyĀ gorgeousĀ you did an awesome job. You have always done amazing work; this is the third custom piece you've made for us!ā€ - AliceĀ
