Inspired by Iceland: Carl & Evelyn's Engagement Ring Story
During a 3 month cycling trip through Europe, you would expect to see some breathtaking sights and unforgettable scenery. For Carl and Evelyn, this was no more true than when their tour took them to the shores of Iceland. It would be a destination that would stay with them forever.
Having visited Iceland once before and falling in love with the country’s natural wonders, Carl and Evelyn planned to have a pre-wedding photoshoot there this time around.
It was the perfect end to an adventurous trip that had seen them cycle over 5,500 km, without really knowing day to day where they would be eating, sleeping or what the next day would bring. A true journey along the road less travelled that Carl and Evelyn say was “the most humbling experience and gifted us the strongest bond together”.
For the photoshoot, the couple headed to Southeastern Iceland where the impressive Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, black sand Diamond Beach and Skaftafell National Park provided incredible backdrops.

When Carl and Evelyn returned to New Zealand, they approached Ian here at The Village Goldsmith to design a custom-made engagement ring. They told Ian about their trip and the significance of Iceland. If one thing stood out for them, it was the presence of the imposingly beautiful icebergs. Carl and Evelyn wanted a unique ring that reflected their travel story. It was also important that the ring was practical and comfortable to wear while cycling! They had seen the designs from The Inspired Collection and thought a bespoke engagement ring modeled on the contemporary ring designs from that collection would suit perfectly.
With Iceland’s natural crown jewels and the aptly named Diamond Beach in mind, Ian created a design with three structures that you are immediately drawn to. Where a traditional ring would have claws holding the diamond, Ian designed icebergs to clasp the beautiful round brilliant cut diamond.
There are three icebergs rather than four to offset the symmetrical nature of the band of the ring and to also capture the random and monumental nature of icebergs floating in the Icelandic waters and washing up along the shore.
For Evelyn and Carl, the ring holds a special memory of their challenges and triumphs together on the road and is a symbol of not only a beautiful place but also a significant life event.
Congratulations to Carl and Evelyn from The Village Goldsmith team. We loved helping you create a lasting memory of this exciting journey and wish you all the best for your future adventures together!
