Combined words from The Village Goldsmith and Wairarapa Hospice:
On the 14th March 2020 the Wairarapa Hospice hosted a Roaring 20s themed cocktail party and charity auction at the Martinborough Town Hall, The Village Goldsmith’s Ian and Christine Douglas had the privilege of attending the event.
The Roaring 20s cocktail party was held to raise funds for the South Wairarapa outreach programmes, and thanks to everyone involved, it was a roaring success, raising forty thousand dollars in just two hours! The original plan was that the fundraised profits be put towards patients and families being given the ability to attend the same kinds of programmes that are run at the Hospice base, Te Kowhai, located in Masterton. However, with more than the anticipated amount being raised, many more opportunities have come to light, such as the Caregivers education programme, creative hands and bereavement support.
Before the auction commenced the Board Chair, Gavin Hodder, was delighted to share for the first time that there has been an offer to build a 6-bed in-patient facility in Greytown. This came about through an arrangement between the Wairarapa Hospice and Greytown’s soon-to-be-built Five Rivers Medical Centre, providing a business case for the establishment of a stand-alone Hospice In-Patient Unit on the grounds of the facility. The Board is currently undertaking a feasibility study and business plan around this very exciting and generous offer.
As part of the charity auction, The Village Goldsmith offered a $5,000 custom design prize package in collaboration with our friend of many years, Neil McCallum, who donated a stunning and rare 8.78ct Tanzanian garnet valued at over $4,000. The winner of the custom bespoke prize, Nalini, will be able to sit with Ian and personally design her dream jewellery piece. Once the design has been created it will be brought to life in our on-site Wellington workshop. This process will be documented and shared through a future newsletter, so watch this space!
