Aquamarine is a blue gemstone named after the Latin phrase "water of the sea" and is a blue to blue-green variety of beryl. Beryl is a type of gemstone naturally comprised of beryllium aluminium cyclosilicate. Other well-known beryl gemstone varieties include emerald and morganite. Aquamarine measures a 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, meaning it is durable if it is well looked after and frequently assessed.

Aquamarine Colours

Aquamarines are found in a range of blues; most commonly light pastel blue. These oceanic gemstones can also be found in a greenish-blue, much like the colour of our New Zealand oceans. The darker the blue of the aquamarine the rarer it is and consequently the higher its value.

Aquamarine Birthstone

Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and the gem of the 19th wedding anniversary.
