The CanadaMark Program

INTEGRITY AND HERITAGE ASSURED

The CanadaMark hallmark program provides independent verification that a diamond is of Canadian origin.

Every CanadaMark diamond is:

  • Responsibly mined in Canada’s Northwest Territories;

  • Natural and untreated;

  • Tracked through audited processes at every stage from country of origin to polished stone; and

  • Polished to meet specific quality standards.

RESPONSIBLY AND ETHICALLY MINED

A CanadaMark diamond starts its journey from the Ekati or Diavik diamond mines. The Ekati mine was Canada’s first surface and underground diamond mine, and the Diavik mine is Canada’s largest diamond mine in terms of carat production.

After discovery of diamonds in the 1990s, both mine sites were subject to intensive environmental assessments and permitting processes. Special priority was given to ensuring the long-term integrity of the land, water and wildlife in the Northwest Territories, which form an essential part of local Aboriginal traditions and daily life.

TRANSPARENT, QUALITY ASSURED PROCESSES

CanadaMark diamonds can only be cut and polished by approved manufacturers. Each manufacturer has been audited by an independent third party, to ensure that their processes can fully track the progress of a Canadian diamond, from mine of origin through to the polished diamond.

Every CanadaMark diamond is given a certificate card. Before this can be issued, the manufacturer must provide detailed evidence of the diamond's origins, technical characteristics, and movement through its tracking systems.

Once a diamond has been accepted into the CanadaMark program, it is laser inscribed with the CanadaMark logo and a unique serial number. This number is recorded on the certificate card, which accompanies the diamond on the rest of its journey. The serial number and stone weights are also entered in the CanadaMark database.

COMPLETELY NATURAL, HIGH QUALITY DIAMONDS

When you see the CanadaMark logo inscribed on a diamond, you can be sure that it is completely natural, and free of treatments that are sometimes used to "improve" a diamond. CanadaMark diamonds are not permitted to be treated by lasers to lighten dark inclusions, fracture-filled to mask inclusions, or subjected to high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) treatments to change the colour.

The CanadaMark logo is also an assurance of quality. Regardless of size, every CanadaMark diamond must also meet specific standards for colour, clarity, finish and symmetry.

CANADIAN DIAMOND RINGS FROM THE VILLAGE GOLDSMITH

We can trace the origin and journey of every Canadian diamond used in our diamond rings and jewellery — the CanadaMark program is one such way. The Village Goldsmith is the only official New Zealand stockist of CanadaMark diamonds and Canadian Sirius Star diamonds.

By choosing a CanadaMark diamond you can be assured that your natural diamond was mined, cut and polished to the highest quality and ethical standards, and you can trace the entire journey of your Canadian diamond.
